Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul. These holy men are recognized for their contribution to the building up of the early Church. It can be said each of these men gave their lives to Jesus and spent themselves doing Godâs will. Peter, a simple fisherman, was chosen to be the first pope, while Paul, a Pharisee in the Jewish faith, after his amazing conversion, traveled extensively to spread the Gospel message. Each had their own special role. Each faced many challenges and difficulties. Each passed on the faith, sometimes with success, other times people rejected them. Each merited martyrdom. They modeled their lives after Jesus as best they could and became pillars of the faith.
And what of us? Each of us are called to model our lives after Jesus as well. We probably wonât be recognized for this as Saints Peter and Paul were, but weâre not seeking recognition, we are seeking sainthood! We can make the statement that; âI canât live like Peter or Paul!â Thatâs true, but thatâs not what you are called to be. You are called to be the person God made you to be, striving to live a holy life, a life set aside for God. That is what each of us are called to. In our own way, we become pillars of the faith. Perhaps as a devout single person who isnât afraid to show co-workers you are a person of faith. Maybe you are a parent, chosen to spread the Gospel message to your children. You become the pillar of faith God has called you to. Does your pillar have cracks and chips? Certainly! Does your pillar fall occasionally? Indeed it does. But it is set upright again by the celebration of the sacraments, especially reconciliation and eucharist. The cracks and chips are mended by our merciful God. These great gifts of God sustain us in our journey of faith.
So let us celebrate these two great saints! Letâs call upon God to assist us in our lives so we can become pillars of the faith as well. And may God bless you.
