Today on this last Sunday of the Church year we celebrate Jesus as the Universal King. We are not familiar with kings here, few kings remain in our world. However, we too share in the role of king by nature of our baptism. When we are baptized we are made priest, prophet, and king. A king rules over his subjects, so you may ask who would I rule over? We are meant to rule over ourselves, showing discipline, using right judgment over all areas of our lives, physical and spiritual. We know it’s no easy task
because we all share a fallen nature. But Jesus has set us free from the slavery of sin.
Sure, we are still tempted and may fall, but we have recourse to the King through His sacramental Church. And how does being king play out in our lives? We must remember that all earthly kings still must recognize and bow down before the King of Kings, Jesus. Our Lord deserves our love and respect. We show Him this love by faithfully following the rules of His Church and by loving our brothers and sisters in Christ. As I stated, this isn’t easy, but the King provides us with weapons to fight against our enemy. Grace abounds, that free gift of God’s Divine Life will flow upon and within us if we simply ask Him for it. By receiving the sacraments of reconciliation and eucharist regularly we can overcome our sinful desires and live holy lives; lives set aside for God, in union with His Church and our brothers and sisters. Prayer is an important aspect of showing our love to our King! So let us recognize the importance of a strong, loving relationship with our King! Let us show this love to all we encounter.
