The reading from 2nd Timothy and the Gospel passage both mention righteousness.  We hear this term fairly often, but what exactly does the author refer to when using this word? Righteousness is described as the quality of being morally right or justifiable.

We want to be morally right, it is what is expected of one who follows Jesus. Yet we know that we make mistakes and are not always right in our judgments, so are not justifiable in that case. The Church provides us with what is right and wrong. There is no guessing about these issues. However, we sometimes fall into the idea that there is a lot of gray area- where our own judgment can be used to make a decision that we feel comfortable with. While I will admit there are times when we are faced with a tough decision it is tempting to avoid taking a stand on what we know in our hearts is wrong, so we call it a “gray” area and don’t follow what is right. We don’t always have the courage to stand up for the truth. But are we morally right in these cases? Are we justifiable?

It takes courage to stand for what is right. One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is fortitude, also known as courage. So when we are faced with these tough situations ask for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. God will provide you with the grace needed whenever you ask.

Let’s all strive for righteousness!
